The Historic New Orleans Mint
A national historic landmark, the New Orleans Mint opened its doors for the first time in 1838 and for the following 23 years struck coins of virtually every denomination. It holds the distinction of being the first U.S. minting facility to strike the Morgan Silver Dollar, the coin most commonly associated with the settling of the American West.
The New Orleans Mint closed during the Civil War, reopening in 1879 and continued minting until 1909. In all, it produced nearly 430 million gold and silver coins bearing the famous "O" mintmark sought after by knowledgeable collectors.
An architectural masterpiece, the New Orleans Mint facility has been restored after damage suffered during Hurricane Katrina and today houses an art gallery.
